About Olivenhain, CA
Part of five communities in Encinitas, Olivenhain is proud of its German heritage and has made an effort to maintain its rural atmosphere despite being in the heart of Southern California. Winding two-lane roads, rail fences, and horse trails all contribute to the area’s peaceful and rustic atmosphere. Low-density zoning of the area has ensured that Olivenhain remain a close-knit community. The town has even enacted a “Dark Skies” policy which limits outdoor lighting, making for some of the best stargazing in North County.
German-speaking immigrants established Colony Olivenhain in 1884 and built the Olivenhain Meeting Hall, which is still standing to this day. The Town Council is now a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation the promotes an appreciation of Olivenhain history and architecture. This includes the maintenance and upkeep of historic Olivenhain buildings, as well as hosting a variety of fundraising events to raise money for ongoing restoration projects, as well as educate the public about the history of the colony.
